A growing share of local searches now get answered directly inside an AI-generated summary at the top of the page, or inside a chat tool like ChatGPT or Perplexity, before a person ever clicks through to a website. If your site isn't structured in a way these tools can read and cite, you can rank well the old way and still lose the customer.
How common is this, actually?
AI-generated answer summaries now appear in roughly 40 to 48 percent of searches, depending on the source and whether the figure is measured for the U.S. or globally, up sharply from around 15 percent a year earlier. Separately, a large and growing share of all Google searches, estimates run as high as around two-thirds, end without the searcher clicking through to any website at all. People are getting their answer without ever visiting a page.
of searches now surface an AI-generated summary, roughly triple the rate from about a year earlier.
Does this mean traditional SEO doesn't matter anymore?
No, it still matters, but it's no longer the whole picture. Ranking in the traditional blue links and getting cited inside an AI-generated answer are increasingly two different outcomes, and the overlap between them has been shrinking. A page can rank well and still not get pulled into the answer a customer actually sees.
What does a business actually do about it?
Structure content so it directly answers the specific questions people ask, with the answer stated clearly near the top of the page rather than buried in a long introduction. Keep a complete, current Google Business Profile, since local map results and profile data feed directly into a lot of AI-generated local answers. And make sure nothing on the site is blocking AI crawlers from reading it in the first place.
How does this connect to my website?
It's part of what we build into every AI-optimized website we set up: content structured around real questions, technical settings that don't block AI crawlers, and a Google Business Profile that's actually kept current. See the full service breakdown or get in touch.
